Director Alex Cox “My Last Movie”

Alex Cox, director of Repo Man, Sid & Nancy, Straight to Hell, Walker and Tombstone Rashomon etc has just announced what is very likely to be his last movie and luckily for us going to be a western.

As an independent filmmaker Alex doesn’t chase after the big companies with the cash, he’d rather keep control of his artistic licence and keep more control over the finished movie which of course means it needs funding in some other way.

The Script is done and filming is expected to take place on location in USA & of course Spain.

I love Alex’ work and would urge anyone reading to maybe bung the project a couple of pounds if you can afford to. I know how hard times are at the moment but If you can and indeed feel you’d like to support what is likely to be his last movie and of another western for us to enjoy then please do so.

A Fistful of Travellers Cheques (the final piece of the jigsaw)

A couple of weeks ago I accidentally stumbled across the final piece of the Travellers Cheques location jigsaw…. Big Julie’s Bar, the scene of the brawl and The Final Duel. I’m more than happy to have found this one even if it is a private house and almost certainly not accessible without permission from the owner. Not far from Los Albaricoques this building is also the main location for the 1985 Jane Birkin Movie “DUST” which was set in Africa and filmed in Almeria.

I assume the apex roof was to make the place look less Spanish.

Rustic Stomp Music Festival UK 2023

This July, Dorset in the Southwest of England is paying host to another Rustic Stomp Festival. Rustic Stomp is a roots festival featuring an array of local, national and international acts (even our very own Sarah Vista is on the lineup).

I have a big soft spot for Dorset with it’s thriving live music scene and I have a hot tip for anyone that is thinking about heading down to the festival, you could do a lot worse than booking a few more days in the area as it is teeming with really interesting stuff to visit such as Maiden Castle, Stonehenge, Chesil Beach and the Cerne Abbas Giant to name but a few. It’s also a great place to visit on the way to Devon which is generally described as better than Dorset

This year’s festival brings together three of the Crawdaddy festival brands under one roof, as it were. The Wonky Donk stage will feature the best of hoedown, country and hillbilly music. The Dark Holler stage takes a slightly, well, darker comedic look at life and the Organford stage is a more accessible, easy listening venue. New for 2023 we’re adding an interactive area which we are calling Dungaville. Dungaville will feature a host of local talent, it will host kids’ entertainment, a hillbilly king and queen fashion show, some games and also the Well Bean Art Tent and Safe Space.

The history of the Rustic Stomp goes back over 10 years, when Hawkeye Houlihan and some friends put on a little festival at the Donkey Sanctuary at Home Farm, Lytchet. The aim then was to help rescue donkeys by putting on some great rustic music that people would love. Well, the donkeys are rescued now and the festival is growing, its aim to put the Dorset ‘roots’ scene on the map.

Lee Van Cleef biographer Mike Malloy has been having a dive into Jorge Rivero’s claim that he acted in not one but three Sartana movies in the 1970’s that were all completed but have never surfaced, It’s a huge tease but very much worth the listen.

I have a little treat for you this week, not of my own doing of course but a few weeks ago I asked Rex Hooper, resident guitarslinger with Natalie Pryce if he was interested in taking part in the Q&A for the page. Rex got back to me a couple of days later and said he would but wanted to go a step further and record it as a video. Thankfully he didn’t need me to take part so you don’t have to listen me talking and of course that alone makes for far better viewing.

In the film Rex tells us a bit more about the music of Natalie Price and of course about his personal favourite Spaghetti Films, Music and People (including why he’d like to go for a drink with Klaus Kinski and why he wouldn’t like to go for a drink with Klaus Kinski). Born on this day 1931 Spanish actor Aldo Sambrell

Sambrell who aside from bagging parts in A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, Once Upon a Time in the West, Duck You Sucker, 100 Rifles, Hannie Caulder & Navajo Joe worked on a total of over 150 films between 1961 & 1996. When he got married in 1964 Sergio Leone was his best man and when he died in 2010 his ashes were scattered at Fort Bravo in Tabernas.

American actress Raquel Welch has sadly passed away.

I’m sad to report that Chicago born actress Raquel Welch has passed away at the age of 82 after a short illness. Raquel’s career spanned over fifty years and includes a couple of very good Spanish filmed westerns, 100 Rifles (1969) where she co-starred alongside Burt Reynolds and Jim Brown then a couple of years later she starred in Hannie Caulder (1971). She is of course also remembered for her part in the 1966 movie One Million Years B.C. which even if you haven’t seen you will almost certainly recollect the imagery.

The Big Gundown has landed

The Big Gundown from Indicator dropped through my letterbox this morning, a little earlier than expected. It looks great and the extras which I’m not normally fussed about are far better than I was expecting. The double sided poster is printed on heavy paper and the booklet features 75, YES Seventy Five pages of information and photos, also on heavy paper (not the typical 3 page glossy affair that you may expect).
